i'm barack obama, and i approve this message. mitt romney's position on women's health...it's dangerous. vo:mitt romney and paul ryan would get rid of planned parenthood funding. and allow employers to deny coverage for cancer screenings and birth control. we can't afford to let him take away our choices... to take away basic health care. vo: both backed proposals to outlaw abortions...even in cases of rape and incest.
7:13 pm
i don't think that women's health issues have faced a crisis like this in decades.
7:14 pm
earlier in tonight's broadcast we've been talking about ambassador christopher stevens killed at a u.s. consulate in libya, feelings that al-qaeda may be involved in that death. joining us now with more perspectives on the dangers to the job is former ambassador to zimbabwe tom macdonald. thank you for being here. during your years there did you feel imminent danger? >> not to me personally, but to my team i did serve during the period of embassy bombings in 1988 where the embassies were attacked in nairobi and taking care of my american people and employees was first and foremost and, in fact, after embassy bombings it's interesting there were a
7:15 pm
handful of more senior employees who were perhaps on their retirement tour. i had to talk some of them back into the building. it was very traumatic for them and scary, but you take care of yourself, but i was really never in fear of my own safety. >> but what about our diplomats and their families? if they're in countries with strong anti-western and anti- american sentiment what's day to day life? >> oh, it's serious. libya is a very serious place with, you know, people have, a plethora of guns, rpgs, kalashnikov is, ak47s around. you can always find arms. christopher stevens, who i didn't know personally, what a hero, he served our country in the greatest tradition and i take off my hat too our military people, but i don't -- to our military people, but i don't think the public realizes diplomats and ambassadors are there representing our president and country anthey
7:16 pm
are targets. >> on that note we may have a rather rose colored view of what diplomats and ambassadors really have to, do lots of teas and things like that. what really is involved in the day to day life when someone does serve our country life this overseas? >> my days were typically 12 to 18 hours. i was in zimbabwe in the second clinton term when zimbabwe was in a free fall when people were being tortured and raped and so forth on farms. i had a fully armored large bmw that took me around. i had diplomatic security agents, but you also separate yourself from the people. we wore through tires. i went around on the roads so much there, was everywhere. so you -- on the one hand you have to be careful and cautious. on the other hand, you cannot isolate yourself at all because that's the purpose. we need to represent america.
7:17 pm
we have a great steer to tell and appear bass -- story to tell and ambassadors and their staff need to be out in public doing that. >> they're the ones convincing the rest of the world in many cases. >> absolutely. christopher stevens serving america in the greatest tradition. i think two employees were not identified. there was an information officer, what we call an amo as i would say, the cable people who worked upstairs from me who would get the communication out every day. so that individual is a hero, too and i'm sure there are many fine libyan local employees and i would agree with president obama. we should not stereotype the libyans as a result of this. we should not let this separate ourselves, but that is very difficult terrain there and i'm glad we're sending marines in. >> thank you for your perspective and help being us salute these heroes. >> thank you. meantime back at home the story of more rabid animals terrorizing neighborhoods in
7:18 pm
fairfax county. police say there have been two more reports in the lake barcroft area where a rabid rabid coon was chasing -- rabid raccoon was chasing animals and pets. >> reporter: we're at hidden pond nature center where police say a rabid beaver jumped out of the waters here onto one of these dogs. they say that beaver was acting aggressively and chasing after children. then just 10 miles down the road another rabid animal, this time a rabid raccoon, was going after neighbors there. carey doyle's father was walking their dog, a sweet 9- year-old beagle bassett hound mix, sunday afternoon when out of nowhere a rabid raccoon came up to them. >> he was pretty freaked out by it. you don't expect to have a rabid raccoon in a neighborhood like this. >> reporter: she says it was acting strangely and even approaching other neighbors near their homes. >> it followed them to our house into our driveway. >> reporter: it is the second
7:19 pm
incident of a rabid animal in this lake barcroft neighborhood. just last week an 80 glide woman was attacked by a rabid we've while she was swimming in the lake. all the reported aggressive animals including this rabid beaver from last week were tracked down and killed by animal control officers. they also all tested positive for rabies. >> it's too soon to make that kind of assessment or that kind of statement, that something is going on, but certainly when these types of things happen, we do take a look and make note of them. >> reporter: at hidden pond nature center in springfield kids were finishing a fishing competition when they saw a rabid beaver come up and start chasing them. with now three rabid animal reports in just the last week neighbors are now a little more on edge. >> we have tons of animals in this neighborhood and people walking their dogs and lots of children. so it's kind of unsafe. >> reporter: what's so unusual is the fact we have two cases of rabid beavers and police say what they think could be going
7:20 pm
on is that those beavers are being bitten by rabid raccoons. in springfield anny hong, 9 news now. >> police say there were no injuries from last weekend's incident. animal control will canvas affected neighborhoods with flyers about rabies safety, which is no joke if you are bitten. it's so serious and the free. is not pleasant. >> but not as bad as -- treatment is not pleasant. >> but not as bad as it used to be i'm told. >> that's true. >> we're looking at a perfect day and perfect evening, a little different story friday. let's start with a live look outside, our live weather cam brought to you by michael and son. after a high of 81 it's down to 76, dew point held steady in the low 50s. that just means the air is dry, good hair day. you can do exercise and not perspire that much, just about perfect. pressure a little bit, 30.32 inches of mercury. currently mainly 70s, 74 arlington, 73 fairfax, even 69 in reston, a little suspect, but we'll give it to you, 73
7:21 pm
vienna, 75 in great falls, 76 college park and look at that, 69 in bowie. we said this all week and we'll say it again. you have a dry air mass which we do. it heats up quickly and cools off quickly which is pretty nice. a nice stretch continues, cool again tonight, not quite as chilly, a terrific thursday. humidity stays low and remember your shades thursday because we're looking at pretty much pure sun once again. so for tonight clear and cool, leave the ac off. you'll need a sweater if pure out late after 10:00 -- you're out late after 10:00, low temperatures 52 to 62, winds south, southeast at 10. by morning sunny, cool start, a sweater, 50s and 60s, probably no 40s tomorrow morning, although the burbs checked in with 40s two mornings in a row, winds light, southeasterly at 5 to 10. by afternoon mostly sunny and gorgeous again, not humid, high temperatures low 80s, winds out of the southeast at 10, pretty much a perfect day.
7:22 pm
in fact, a perfect day from the mountains to the coast, 74 in polkland, 80 in cumberland, mostly sunny, around 80 in hagerstown, martinsburg and winchester. culpeper a little warmer, low 80s, 80 in warrenton, manassas and leesburg, probably 81 or so in fairfax. downtown 81, low 80s into southern maryland, low 80s to around 80 up into north on 270 through frederick and even by the water temperature around 80 in annapolis and the winds have been negligible, so there's no small craft advisory for the bay or tidal potomac. 52 to 62 to start, great by noon, mid- to upper 70s, great by evening, 79 to 83. hard to diagram a better day, quite frankly. next three days code green, spectacular tomorrow, 81, nice friday, 82, yes, a shower late friday fire, a few clouds friday afternoon. so not as picture perfect but
7:23 pm
nice. next seven days we've kept sunday dry, upper 70s. so that frontal boundary will go through friday night instead of saturday night which is good. monday some showers and thunderstorms again and then tuesday maybe leftover shower or back in the low 80s and then cool on wednesday, but brisk and nice, low 70s. >> love it, love it. we're back after the break with some big news of events happening in our area and topper and i promise not to sing. we'll be right back. >> really.
